Day 1

Machame Gate (1,640 meters) to Machame Camp (2,835 meters)

Hiking time: 5-7 hours

Distance: ~11km / 7 miles

Habitat: Rainforest

We meet our guides and porters after breakfast and sort out all our gear before we set off for our 1-hour transfer by road to the South Western side of Kilimanjaro and the Machame Gate at the entrance to the Mt Kilimanjaro National Park. Each person has a personal porter and there are extra porters for the food, etc. 

The climb starts from machame gate (1830m), we walk through the lush lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Slowly gaining altitude while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest. 

We arrive mid-afternoon at the Machame Hut, situated at 3000m above sea level  where we make camp. The huts fell into disrepair some years ago, so with the help of our porters, we set up tents for the night. Enjoy an evening meal prepared by the porters and savour the first night of sleeping outdoors.

If is a clear day we may get our first closer look at the glaciated dome of Kibo if the evening clouds permit. 

Day 2

Machame Camp (2,835 meters) to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters)

Hiking time:4-6 hours

Distance: ~5km / 3 miles

Habitat: Low Alpine Zone

A shorter day climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic site, and continue up a gentler ascent through the lower alpine moorland, which is known for beautiful wild alpine flowers. The most spectacular views of Kibo peak can be seen from Shira Camp.

Day 3

Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters) to Lava Tower (4,600 meters) and then Barranco Camp (3,900 meters)

Hiking time:5-7 hours

Distance:  ~11km / 7 miles

Habitat: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone

Today we walk on a gentle ascent and panoramic views.  We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and after hot lunch the bottom of the Lava Tower (4,600 m.) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.).

Day 4

Barranco Camp (3,900 meters) to Karanga Camp (3,960 meters) (and then Barafu Camp – 4,680 meters)

Hiking time:8-10 hours

Distance:  ~9.5km / 6 miles

Habitat: High alpine zone

A steep climb up the eastern wall leads us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. We then take a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo, the trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, finally we have a steep climb up to Karanga Camp,If you are on a six day trek you will stop for lunch at Karanga Camp and then continue on along the Southern Circuit until it joins the Mweka Trail up to Barafu Camp (4,680 meters). For six day trekkers, day 4 takes approximately 8-10 hours to complete and covers 9.5km / 6 miles. When you arrive at Barafu around mid-afternoon you will be served an early dinner and encouraged to get some shut-eye as the summit trek commences around 24:00 that night.

Note:

Trekkers on the seven day route spend the night at Karanga Camp before continuing on to Barafu. This additional day is beneficial in terms of acclimatisation.

Day 5

Barafu Camp (4,680 meters) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) and then Mweka Camp (3,100 meters)

Hiking time:6-8 hours to the summit and then 5-8 hours to Mweka

Distance: 4.5km / 3 miles ascent and then 11km / 7 mile descent

Habitat: Glacial zone and the all preceding zones

Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. We begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5,735m. We will rest there for few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa. After a few minutes to appreciate your accomplishment we descend to Barafu is amazingly fast, and we stop at Barafu Camp for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Mweka Camp.

Day 6

Mweka Camp (3,100 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)

Hiking time:3-5 hours

Distance: ~9km / 5.5 miles

Habitat: Rainforest

A gentle walk takes you down through the rainforest to Mweka gate successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. After lunch we drive back to Arusha for hotel and lodging.

Day 7 : Ngorongoro.

Depart Arusha for Ngorongoro arriving in time for lunch at Campsite. Afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at Campsite.

Day 8 : Ngorongoro Crater.

Breakfast at the camp and descend to the crater floor by a special 4WD vehicle for a full day game viewing, Picnic lunch at taken at the crater, hosts unbelievable variety of wildlife. This is an experience to treasure always. Ascend back to the campsite for dinner and overnight.

Day 9 : Serengeti National Park.

Breakfast at Campsite and depart Ngorongoro for vast Serengeti National Park. Stop at Olduvai Gorge, the site for the famous archeological finds by the Leakey family. Lunch at Campsite in serengeti. Afternoon game drive inside the park. Dinner and overnight at Campsite.

Day 10 : Serengeti.

Breakfast followed by morning game drive to different parts of the park. Serengeti is famous for it’s annual migration when millions of wildebeest (gnus) and zebras set off for Maasai Mara for better grazing grounds and water. Serengeti boasts of more than 35 species of plains game including the “Big Five” as well as extensive bird-life. Meals and overnight at Campsite.

Day 11 : Lake Manyara National Park.

Early breakfast in Serengeti and proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. Lunch at Campsite near the Park. Afternoon game drive inside the Park, look for and shoot a picture of the curious tree-climbing lions, Lake Manyara has a marvelous concentration of game including 350 species of birds. See the simba river populated with schools of Hippo and bird-life. Dinner and overnight at Campsite.

Day 12 : Arusha.

Breakfast in Manyara and depart for Arusha with lunch enroute arriving Arusha in the afternoon .Board your flight to your next destination.
